History Behind My Craft

During Edo period (17-19th century), Kaga region of Japan (modern day Ishikawa prefecture) thrived as a castle city. Kaga was famous for pottery, green tea, and above all, its kimono making.

The seamstress of Kaga Yuzen kimono makers used to make their own thimble from leftover silk threads, each unique in its own way. These thimbles are made of papers and silk, which fits fingers nicely yet surprisingly sturdy as silk threads are tightly stitched around thimbles. These thimbles are called "Kaga Yubinuki (thimble)", and the designs and techniques of making Kaga Yubinuki has been carried forward over generations.

    About the Artist

Arnaco jewelry has been founded by Japanese woman (me), and I have been living in tropical Singapore with my family for the past 8 years.

Since I was small, I have always been drawn to bold lines and strong colors. It was no wonder that I felt a strong "pull" when I saw this traditional craft for the first time. I have been making silk jewelry for a few years now. I re-designed traditional thimble into smaller and wearable everyday earrings and necklaces, combining silk beads with different materials such as metal and stones.

I love the shine of the silk thread and the unlimilted possibilities of color/design variations. Singapore is full of vibrant colors and diverse cultures. I take inspiration from the nature and people around me and infuse it into traditional Japanese craft in modern form.

    About My Jewelry

Using the same technique to make Kaga Yubinuki, I create silk jewelries combined with different materials such as metals, semi-precious stones and vintage beads. Silk beads is made with water-proof thick paper, bias tape and silk threads. It is made by hand stitching thin silk threads in zigzag pattern around the core, weaving and layering if required, until the surface is covered in silk thread (please check the video section).
My jewelry is 100% hand made from the beginning to the end, hand stitched with precision and patience. It is light and durable, and with proper care it will last for a long time.
